For the Martha's Vineyard town of Chilmark, we were asked to renovate and expand the existing library which was housed in a charming 200-year-old "Cape Cod" building. The challenge here was to develop a design that met the Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners (MBLC) program and size requirements for modern library facilities without damaging the village character and small scale of Chilmark. |

| Given the public concern for the site and its context, masking the physical expansion of the facility became the biggest hurdle. Our design broke the building down into a series of smaller scale pieces proportional to the antique homestead and retained an intimate feel while doubling the floor area of the original library. | |

Each new element mimicked the form and architectural vocabulary of the original structure. The new roofs matched the pitch and height of the existing buildings and reinforced the village feel of Beetle Bung Corner. While the design is very much in keeping with the antique Cape, we were nonetheless able to incorporate dramatic and light-infused new spaces (see photo of the interior view from the library's new entrance) |
