Fishers Island,
New York
This harborside home on a small island off the Connecticut coast was lacking one essential thing. While it boasted a large dock and generous porch that welcomed guests arriving by water, the street facade had only a small, crooked set of steps. This home was a well-loved summer gathering place for a family and their friends, and the owners hired Charlie Van Voorhis to fashion an entrance that would draw people into the house. He created a covered porch that uses the detailing found elsewhere on the house and is large enough for a porch swing and woodpile. Visitors are always amazed to learn that this porch is a recent addition.
