The School Street Renovation for the Taunton Office of Community Development

This historic National Register Property lacked accessibility and had large open classrooms that seemed unfit for modern offices. The design utilized a series of partitions - half plaster and half glass - to retain the volume and feel of the original classrooms. A new elevator placed within one of the two original stair towers provided handicap accessibility throughout the building. This project started out with a series of meetings that studied multiple options and helped establish a clear set of priorities that took into consideration universal accessibility, cost, scheduling, the special requirements of outside funding agencies and the programmatic needs of modern office space. Carefully prepared drawings and clear specifications kept bidder costs down, and a well-crafted set of alternates ensured the project when bid matched the funds available.
